Jeffrey M. Schlerf is Chairman of Bayard. He has been a director since 1999. As a member of its Bankruptcy practice area, he maintains a diverse law practice in the areas of commercial bankruptcy, restructurings, insolvencies, liquidations, loan workouts, commercial litigation and mediation. Jeffrey’s clients include debtors, creditors’ committees, trustees, secured and unsecured creditors, purchasers and litigants in federal and state courts.

Jeffrey has over 20 years of professional experience relating to the financial industry. Prior to attending law school, Jeffrey worked as an economist in the public sector at the Federal Reserve and subsequently for a large financial institution. Jeffrey joined Bayard in 1995.

During his career, Jeffrey has represented the interests of all types of parties in many of the larger bankruptcy cases in the United States. Jeffrey’s recent engagements include the representation of a large debtor in the power generation industry, a permanent trustee in liquidation of companies in the mortgage industry, a “stalking horse” bidder in a bankruptcy auction process, and several trustees prosecuting various types of litigation. In 2006 and again in 2007, Jeffrey attended an intensive mediation training program at the Strauss Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University School of Law. He is a member of the Mediation Panel for the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.

Jeffrey has frequently been an author and an editor over the course of his career. Most recently, he was the issue editor for the Winter 2006/2007 edition of the Delaware Lawyer entitled Chapter by Chapter, the First State’s Contributions to Bankruptcy Law. He has authored articles that have addressed the topics of Chapter 11 plan exclusivity, equity committees, substantive consolidation, the Delaware bankruptcy practice and judicial “legislating.” He is a member of the Board of Editors of the Delaware Lawyer. Jeffrey has recently been recognized again by Chambers USA as a leader in the field of bankruptcy and restructuring. In addition, he was named a Delaware Super Lawyer for 2007.

Jeffrey is active locally in professional, cultural, political and social organizations.
